RTVE and EITB, in collaboration with Shine Iberia (Banijay Iberia), are producing “Generación Cannabis”, a two-part documentary series on one of the most silenced and devastating problems among young people: the consequences of the most widespread illegal drug in Spain. The series was presented this Friday at the FesTVal in Vitoria, attended by Urbana Gil, director of TVE’s Society and Culture Department; Macarena Rey, CEO of Shine Iberia; and José María Fábregas, a psychiatrist specialising in the treatment of addiction, at an event hosted by María Eizaguirre, director of Communication and Participation at RTVE.
“We are closing our presence at FesTVal with “Generación Cannabis”, a documentary series that will stir us up. Through a series of stories, we will learn about problems that are sometimes silenced in Generation Z,‘ said María Eizaguirre. ’At RTVE, we are particularly pleased to be involved in this project, which fits in perfectly with our public service motto,‘ said Urbana Gil. ’There is a problem with cannabis use, and one way to combat it is with accurate information and testimonials. It’s a must-see programme as it offers you tools to tackle this problem,” she explained. Urbana Gil also confirmed the upcoming availability of all the “Generation…” documentaries on RTVE Play: “Generation Porn”, “Generation Click”, “Genderless”, which is already available, and the one presented at FesTVal, “Generation Cannabis”. Four documentary series that, in the words of Macarena Rey, are ‘necessary’ and ‘have been very well received by the public’. In “Generación Cannabis”, ‘we are going to explain that the trivialisation of this drug is far from harmless’. There are ‘two episodes that focus on the problems posed by cannabis use for teenagers and children’ and also on possible solutions: ‘The important thing is that they also contain tools to solve them’. José María Fábregas was responsible for putting this problem and the psychiatric consequences of drug use in adolescence into context: ‘Disconnection from the world, verbal aggression towards mothers, failure at school, psychotic episodes, future substance use…’, he listed. ‘There is a difference between starting at age 10 and starting at age 25 that is noticeable in the maturation of the brain,’ explained the doctor, adding that Spain ‘is the world’s leading consumer of cannabis.’ ‘Cannabis has a decisive influence on the maturation process. It influences adolescent consumption and future consumption because it is a gateway to other substances,’ he concluded.
The documentary series “Generación” on RTVE Play
Before the arrival of “Generación Cannabis”, RTVE Play will soon premiere “Generación Click”, the documentary series that uncovered the dangers, threats and challenges faced by young people on the internet. In addition, RTVE’s online platform will soon premiere “Generación Porno”, which explores how the pornography industry influences the sex lives of the younger generations. With four episodes each, they address two other serious problems facing Generation Z through the testimonies of teenagers, parents, professionals and experts. They join another co-production by RTVE and EITB in collaboration with Shine Iberia, “Genderless”, which can now be enjoyed on RTVE Play. This is a two-part documentary series, released at the beginning of this summer, which addresses gender identity through different testimonies and from the perspective of diversity and tolerance.
